Following the Regional Qualifier at West Byfleet on Monday 17 May, Sue Mawhinney (gross winner) and Anna Dougal (net winner) progressed to represent London in the National Finals at Aldwark Manor Golf and Spa Hotel on Monday 2 – Wednesday 4 August.
The
venue was beautiful, situated in gorgeous countryside in North
Yorkshire midway between York and Harrogate. The golf course itself
was a very
pretty and lush parkland course that was much more challenging than it first appeared, with clever use of water and bunkers. While relatively flat, it had some tricky holes – notably the 10th with the tempting approach shot over the pond; the 15th with the tree whose branches spanned almost the whole of the approach to the green; and the signature 18th.
Aided by a certain amount of good
fortune, including a ridiculous shot out of
a greenside bunker on the 17th for a birdie during her first round, after two
rounds, Anna Dougal emerged victorious in the handicap competition.
This was a great competition, played in fantastic spirit, in a beautiful and luxurious venue, with all (reasonable) competitor costs covered by CSSC.
