I am not amused!
Richard
Jones could not understand the amusement of members as he recounted
his misfortune during the morning round. He recalled that he had
played a reasonable tee shot to the right side of the first fairway.
"I parked my trolley alongside the ball and then walked forward to
ask a greenkeeper on his tractor if he would move as he was in line
of my next shot."
"Over my right shoulder, I then heard a whoosing sound and turned to see my trolley and clubs hurtling towards the pond. Before I could react, there was splash and trolley, clubs and all began to disappear into the water. I instinctively went after them, waded in and with some struggling managed to rescue them before they completely disappeared."
His playing partners were too far away to help and just watched in amazement as Richard then returned to the pond. Mark Hitchen called over to ask what he was doing now and got the response, "My battery is down there somewhere." Luckily he found it. After refitting it, draining water from his bag and testing that the motor still worked, he pluckily continued and finished the round.
Richard's lunch break was taken up with trying to dry out his clubs and bag contents. This included his pipe tobacco which consequently was difficult to light.
In his address, Captain Graham Hoy commented that there could only one winner of his special prize and Richard gratefully accepted it as a consolation to his day of woe.
